Abbey National
I have a zero credit card. For the last month or so I have been unable to log onto it online - an essetial function for me for all banking that I hold. I can't check transactions etc . I have phoned them three times now complaining. Each time I am told it is a problem with certain cards and that it is being sorted out. The initial 24hours I was given passed with no change. Two subsiquent calls confirmed that dates etc were just pie in the sky. I am supposed to get a call on Monday advising why I still can't access my account despite Friday being the day it was supposed to have been sorted out. I have had numerous promises broken and have advised them I will no longer use the card until the problems have been sorted out. As if they care anyway......... I am now concerned that their taking over Alliance + Leicester will show similar problems as I use that account to run the household bills. My Abbey bank account + E saver appear ok but only because I control it all on the net and the local branch (I always go to a smaller one in Leighton Buzzard,) are still relating to customers even if everytime I go in there I over hear other customers constantly complaining. I only gave one star because the sytem doesn't allow you to leave it blank!!!

Amex
I have a corporate AMEX card and it is good for collecting air miles. As with all AMEX cards they are not accepted everywhere because the merchant fees are so high but as a card user it is always best to use them where you can especially if the business you are buying from doesn't levy a surcharge! They have a strange way of setting credit limits by saying they don't exist. I am sure they must have a limit but I haven't found it yet.

CapitalOne Bank
Capital One wanted me to send proof of address after I moved house, I have been their customer for years and now I'll have to wait a month until I get a bill on my name at the new home, send it away, wait another month probably, I'm not impressed.

First Direct
First Direct had a great thing going where you could do a balance transfer 0% for 6 months on the Gold card and then cancel that and do a 0% on the normal black card and repeat. However all credit to their IT system picking me up on the 4th iteration of this trick they decided that they were going to not offer me the huge 25k! limit they had offered me on the previous 3 loops of this but instead they would only give me 3k to stop me gaming the system. Huge limits available though if you don't get a bad mark like I have :)

Goldfish
Gave up using credit cards a few years ago. Best thing I ever did. All debt now with bank and I don't ramp it up as much as I see it on the ATM when I check my balance.

Halifax
I got a great deal from Halifax when I was transferring a balance. They offered 12 months interest free balance transfer and 12 months free on purchases too which is pretty unusual. It meant that I could pay the balance off without having to worry about interest stacking up and if I needed the card to make the odd purchase during the year, I knew I wouldn't be stung with huge charges. Customer services are really good at Halifax too, I never have any trouble getting hold of anyone on the phone if I need to. I mostly use the online banking facility though and find that easy and convenient to use.

Marks Spencer
Dont use a marks and spencer credit card if you are ever likely to have to contact them. It is impossible to understand the operators and they seem totally unable to resolve simple problems. It's opk if everything's going well and you never need to contact them

Mint
Mint is the RBS card now I think and I got one of these for a balance transfer after I had used the initial 0% they haven't come up with any good repeat offers since instead preferring to try and convert you to a loan so it's ok initially but not that great a card overall. I thought the design of the lower end card with the corner chopped off was novel but apparently they don't work in a lot of the automated machines like Odeon cinema ticket collections and in the petrol station forecourts. I have not verified that though as I went for the platinum one which is just normal shape.

Morgan Stanley
I have a Morgan Stanley Platinum and use it for my main credit card to do every day purchases. They have a sensible lending criteria that isn't too lax or too tight either but lets you build up a history and your limits based on affordability. I don't like they way they keep sending through balance transfer cheques but quite a few cards do that so it's not that annoying. Cashback is good though and as long as they keep that this will remain my preferred card for spending.

Nationwide
Nationwide gold card is one of the few real status symbols left in the mainstream credit card market where every other provider hands out gold and platinum cards to just about anyone even if your address is 14 Bad Credit Avenue! I am proud to have one and this is also my number one card to use when abroad because of the really competitive foreign exchange rates and absence of fees for conversion. If they offered cash back I would use it in the UK too.

Sainsburys
i wouldn't recommend Sainsbury's to anybody and am currently in the process of closing both my accounts with them. Aside from their poor customer service, and organisation skills, i believe this bank does not see you as an individual customer. therefore there are plenty more superior banks out there who would be grateful of your custom.

Virgin Money
I have used the Virgin card as my first MBNA card for balance transfers and it was a good choice I got a 15k limit straight away and a 9 month 0% deal when that was the leading deal in the market place. They have offered pretty good balance transfers since but nowadays with the 2% fee up front they are not really 0% any more so it's not as good as 2003-6
