If you travel a great deal, make sure that you get a credit card that is compatible with this lifestyle and will offer you helpful perks and incentives through usage, e.g. free travel insurance. The credit card provider CapitalOne caters especially for the frequent traveller. It does not charge you to make transactions on your credit card abroad, which many other providers will, and is subsequently an excellent choice if you are going to be making lots of foreign purchases, e.g. for business. A common feature of many other credit cards is that they will reward you airmiles for each purchase you make with your credit card. This can greatly lower the price of your airline ticket.

Before you go away, make sure that your credit card works abroad. Ring your bank or credit card issuer to tell them that you are going away and where you are going, so that they do not think that your card has been stolen when they see foreign transactions being made and erroneously cancel your card whilst you are away.

Also, before you leave, double check the credit limit on each card that you take away with you, and the expiration dates. Take more than one card with you, so that if there is a problem with one then you always have other backup cards. Paradoxically though, try and stick to only using one card whilst you are away, so that you can keep track of your spending. Make sure that you keep all receipts of any purchases you make so, when you get home, you can check these against your statement and ensure everything is in order.

Treat your credit card with the same protection as you would your cash and keep it safe as, if you lose the card, it can easily be used to make Internet purchases. Write down the credit card numbers in case the cards do get stolen but, once again, keep these safe and definitely do not write down the security code with them.
